Understanding the Difference Between 200, 300, and 500-Hour YTT Programs

The Basics of a 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program

Your 200-hour yoga teacher training will be the foundation from which you teach, so it’s important to choose wisely when deciding where to go. For someone new to the world of yoga, we believe an immersion program is an excellent choice —one that allows you to fully commit yourself to learning, interpreting, and internalizing the philosophies of yoga.

In this program, you will learn all the fundamentals:

  • how a class is structured
  • understanding Asanas, Pranayamas, and meditation techniques
  • anatomy and the mechanics of yoga poses
  • Ayurveda, chakras and other yogic concepts to help you be a well-rounded teacher
  • ritual
  • the ethics and business of yoga
  • the history of yoga

During your 200-hour yoga teacher training, you will also nurture your personal practice, which, next to your training, is paramount to passing on wisdom to others. This learning will create a platform for transformation for you personally, as well as the people you hope to teach.

Any 200-hour yoga teacher training—especially a fully immersive program—will help you go even deeper into what yoga means for you and your potential students.

200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training

According to Yogi Aaron, “You will leave Blue Osa feeling as if you have just immersed your whole being into a tradition of yoga. Every part of you will be completely and utterly transformed.”

This 200-hour yoga teacher training is designed to cultivate healthy daily patterns through early morning meditation with the sunrise, and a daily Asana and Pranayama practice combined with classroom interaction and reading material. Through this structure, you and your fellow yogis will become more certain and stable, allowing you to soften, go deep, and address imbalances in your lives.

300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training

Have you already earned your 200-hour certification, been teaching for a while, but know that there is always more to learn? Would you like to offer more to your students? Are you interested in expanding your yoga business and building stronger entrepreneurial skills?

Then a 300-hour yoga teacher training program is the next step.

Once you complete this training, you will be eligible to register with the Yoga Alliance as an RYT-500 (Registered Yoga Teacher- 500 Hours).

Some people opt to piece their 500-hour certification together by doing smaller, incremental trainings, but there are options out there, such as the one Blue Osa offers, that allows you to get everything done in one big immersion. Whatever path you take, your training must come from a Yoga Alliance registered school (RYS) if you want to earn your 500-hour certification.

Yoga Teacher Training FAQs:

If I obtained my 200-hour certification from a different school, am I still eligible to participate in your 300-hour program?

Yes, but to register your 500-hours with the Yoga Alliance, your 200-hour program must have also been certified through the Yoga Alliance.

Will I be eligible to register with the Yoga Alliance after your 200 or 300-hour training?

Yes. Blue Osa is a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with the Yoga Alliance at 3 levels: RYS 200, RYS 300, and RYS 500. Once you complete one of our 200 or 300-hour trainings, you will receive your teaching certificate. This makes you a Certified Yoga Teacher (CYT). You can then submit your certificate to the Yoga Alliance to become a Registered Yoga Teacher for your specific level (RYT 200 or RYT 500).

What is the difference between the 200, 300, and 500–hour programs?

Your 200-hour teaching certificate is the basic level of training that is recognized by the Yoga Alliance. It means that you are certified to teach yoga and eligible to register with the Yoga Alliance as RYT 200.

The 300–hour program is for participants who already have a 200–hour certificate and wish to earn their advanced 500–hour certification.

When you complete your 300-hour program, it means you have a total of 500 hours of yoga teacher training. You are eligible to register with the Yoga Alliance as RYT 500, which means that you are able to teach yoga with the deeper knowledge and skills developed through more extensive training and study.
